Western Xia Cold-Forged Armor(the Houshi-Jia) adopts iron black-oxide finished, forging and quenching techniques. Forged from refined iron and sewn with cowhide, it is lightweight yet highly defensive. The full-length vambraces and pauldrons overlap one another, granting greater manoeuvrability alongside formidable defensive capacity.
The overlapping scales are forged to a thickness of 1-2 mm, with a maximum thickness of 2.3 mm. This cold-forged lamellar armour crafted by the Tangut people is woven from more than 3,000 scales of varying sizes arranged in alternating overlaps. With edges pressed and shaped by forging, the scales can withstand strikes from most cold weapons.
This craft was first systematically documented by the scientist Shen Kuo in Dream Pool Essay, completed in 1086. During the armor production, cold forging hammering reduces the original iron‑sheet thickness by two‑thirds, while leaving unforged “pimple‑shaped” zones for workmanship inspection. Cold‑deformation hardens the metal, enabling it to resist bolts from powerful crossbows fired from a distance of fifty paces.
