Tiefutu (Iron-Pagoda) heavy cavalry of the Jin Dynasty enjoy great renown in Chinese history. The cataphract horse barding was assembled from lamellar scales, which full set weighed 60kg (human armor:27.5kg; horse barding: 32.5kg) with scales of 0.9 mm thick. The horse’s head and body as well as the rider’s are covered by iron lamellar. Forged by fold‑forging techniques, the armor comprised over 5,000 scales of varying sizes, bringing the total weight to 40 kg. Even a few hundred Iron‑Pagoda heavy cavalrymen posed a dire threat to enemy infantry of the era.
