Mongol Heavy Cavalry Armor

Drawing on armor‑making techniques of the Central Plains, the Jurchen-Jin Dynasty and the Western Xia regime, this armor mainly adopts hot‑forged and quenched iron lamellar scales. It is lined with multiple layers of thick cowhide as base material and laced together with cowhide thongs. Iron components receive black‑oxide finishing for rust prevention, which balances mobility for mounted charges with resistance against arrow strikes and slashing blows, well‑suited for prolonged combat on horseback.
Forged iron lamellar scales are mostly 1-2 mm thick; the effective protective layer reaches 2-3 mm after scales are overlapped. Scales are mostly willow-leaf-shaped or rounded-rectangular with punched edges are polished to prevent fraying of lacing cords.
This full set of heavy-cavalry lamellar armor consists of more than 2,000 iron scales of varied dimensions, arranged in alternating-overlap patterns in all directions. Slits in the skirt plates accommodate riding, squatting and sitting postures without restricting leg movement. Chain-mail is added to safeguard vulnerable areas such as the elbows.
Detachable pauldrons and extended full-length vambraces overlap and interlock, allowing scales to slide and shift as shoulders and arms move. The body armour extends downward to long skirt plates that provide protection down to the knees. It is fitted with an iron helmet and lamellar neck-guard scales to shield the neck and cheeks, while the face mask is capable of resisting arrow impacts.
